Cruiseship Marco Polo. We have served as dance instructors on this ship for 7 cruises. This ship is one of a handful of cruise ships that can actually land passengers on Antarctica. Most other cruise ships can only permit a distant viewing of Antarctica.

A scene from the Marco Polo. Antarctica would increase in size by 50% in the winter due to sea ice forming. However, it is now summer, and the sea ice is gone, and some of the coastal land is exposed; those were our landing sites.

Iceberg and sea ice. Icebergs are formed when large chunks of ice, formed from snow and rain on land, slide into the sea. Sea ice is formed when sea water freezes.

Penguin colony. The brown stuff is guano (i.e., penguine poop).
Icebergs. Note the beautiful blue color.
